Nvidia, TSMC, the equipment makers, and the chip supply chain underneath the AI buildout
30 stories · Updated 3m agoChips are the physical layer of the AI trade and the point where technology, geopolitics, and markets collide. This hub tracks the Technology and Equities desks’ semiconductor coverage: the designers, the foundries, the equipment makers, the export controls that decide who can buy what, and the demand signals that move some of the largest companies in the world.

The basics · reviewed September 25, 2026
- How is the semiconductor industry structured?
- Some companies design chips, some manufacture them in foundries, some make the equipment the foundries use, and some do several of these at once. The most advanced manufacturing is concentrated in a small number of facilities, which is why supply, capacity, and geography are constant market questions.
- Why did AI change the chip market?
- Training and running large AI models requires specialized processors in enormous quantities, and the companies building AI capacity became the largest buyers of the most advanced chips. That demand reshaped revenue, valuations, and capital spending across the entire supply chain.
- How do export controls affect chip companies?
- Restrictions on selling advanced chips and manufacturing equipment to certain countries cut off revenue for some suppliers and create incentives for those countries to build domestic alternatives. Every change to the rules reprices the companies on both sides.
