Broadcast deals, streaming, league valuations, and the money reshaping how sports are watched and owned
30 stories · Updated 4d agoSports are the last programming that people watch live, which makes their rights the most valuable content in media and their teams among the most valuable private assets in the world. This hub follows the Sports Business desk’s coverage of the money: broadcast and streaming deals, league expansion, franchise sales, private equity’s arrival, and the economics underneath every trade and transfer.

The basics
- Why are sports media rights so valuable?
- Live sports are one of the few things audiences watch in real time, with advertising, rather than on demand, which makes them the anchor for broadcasters and streaming services trying to hold subscribers. Leagues sell those rights in multi-year contracts that have become the largest revenue line for most major sports.
- How are streaming services changing sports?
- Streaming platforms now bid directly against traditional networks for rights, splitting seasons across more services, raising the total leagues collect, and changing where fans find games. It has also pushed leagues to think about producing and distributing their own content.
- Why are team valuations rising?
- Scarcity, media revenue that grows faster than most businesses, a limited number of buyers with the capital to compete, and, more recently, rule changes allowing private equity funds to buy minority stakes, which widened the pool of capital chasing a fixed number of franchises.
