Quarterly results, guidance, and the numbers that reprice the biggest companies in the market
30 stories · Updated 7m agoFour times a year, companies open their books and the market decides what it believes. This hub collects the Markets desk’s earnings coverage: the results, the guidance that matters more than the results, the reactions, and the read-through from one company’s quarter to its entire sector.

The basics · reviewed September 25, 2026
- What is earnings season?
- The period of several weeks after each calendar quarter ends when most public companies report results. Because so many companies report in a compressed window, earnings season is when the market’s view of the economy and individual sectors gets reset.
- Why can a stock fall after beating estimates?
- Because the price already reflected expectations, and what moves it is the gap between the result and what investors privately assumed, plus what the company says about the next quarter. Guidance, margins, and one line in the outlook often matter more than the headline number.
- What should readers look at beyond earnings per share?
- Revenue growth and whether it is accelerating, margins, cash flow, guidance for the coming period, and any change in capital spending or buybacks. For most companies, one or two of these are the real story and the headline per-share figure is the least informative number in the release.
