Who is Mike Johnson?
Mike Johnson is an American lawyer and politician serving as the 56th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives since 2023. A member of the Republican Party, he has represented Louisiana's 4th congressional district since 2017. His district is based in Shreveport and includes much of the state's northwestern portion. Johnson is known for contesting the results of the 2020 presidential election on the House floor and in court. He is also a social conservative who supported bills to ban abortion nationwide.
Career
Johnson began his career as an attorney in private practice and for the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a conservative Christian legal advocacy group. He also served on the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention from 2004 to 2012. His political career started in 2015 when he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives, serving until 2017. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016, representing Louisiana's 4th congressional district, before becoming Speaker in 2023.
