WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump convened a "Super Intelligence Luncheon" at the White House on Tuesday, gathering artificial intelligence executives. The meeting, held in the East Room, was closed to the press and focused on AI development and policy.
The White House meeting occurred hours after House Speaker Mike Johnson advocated for greater oversight and transparency in the AI industry. Johnson, speaking to CNBC, suggested that AI firms could voluntarily implement these steps, including external auditing.
"There's corporate responsibility here. Of course these folks have to provide safe products," Johnson said. He added that "a little oversight, a little transparency, a little external auditing of what's going on would calm the nerves of a lot of people."
Johnson also cautioned against what he called "hyperregulation" of the technology sector. He said the United States must balance keeping technology safe with maintaining its global competitive edge.
"I have resisted the siren song to jump in and do these blanket moratoriums and all of this, you know, hyperregulation, because we cannot lose our edge to China," Johnson said. He stressed the need to ensure America leads in this technology while also developing it safely.
This high-level engagement in Washington comes as AI capabilities continue to expand into everyday tools.
President Trump's schedule for Tuesday included the 12:30 p.m. Super Intelligence Luncheon, followed by a 3 p.m. policy meeting in the Oval Office. The White House released a seating chart for the luncheon, indicating a broad representation of major AI labs and tech companies.
