Kristalina Georgieva is a Bulgarian economist who has served as the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) since 2019. She is the first person from an emerging market economy to lead the institution. At the IMF, she is known for helping steer the global economy through the COVID-19 pandemic, providing $1 trillion in liquidity and reserves to member countries.
Career
Georgieva began her career by teaching economics. She served as European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid, and Crisis Response from 2010 to 2014, and as vice-president of the European Commission from 2014 to 2016. She was the first chief executive officer of the World Bank from 2017 to 2019, also serving as Acting President in 2019, before becoming managing director of the IMF.
