Who is Arthur Hayes?
Arthur Hayes is an American banker, entrepreneur, and derivatives trader. He is the co-founder of the cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX and currently serves as the Chief Investment Officer of Maelstrom. Hayes is known for his role in establishing BitMEX. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to a violation of the Bank Secrecy Act and was sentenced to six months of home detention, two years of probation, and a $10 million fine. He was pardoned in 2025.
Career
Hayes began his investment banking career in Hong Kong in 2008. He worked for Deutsche Bank from 2008 to 2011 as an equity derivatives trader and head ETF market maker. Following this, he worked for Citigroup for two years as a Delta one trader and head ETF market maker. He later co-founded BitMEX and now holds the Chief Investment Officer role at Maelstrom.
