Arthur Hayes, CEO of Flop Labs, delivered sharp criticism of crypto tokenomics practices in an Oct. 16 interview with Luke Martin, arguing the industry has systematically abused token distribution models from ICOs to VC private sales.
Hayes said projects routinely raise substantial capital under the guise of product development, then deploy token distribution models that hammer retail investors acquiring at token generation events. Price plunges arrive fast—retail gets crushed while early insiders unwind positions.
Retail is wising up. Hayes observed that investors now actively reject high fully diluted valuation tokens with minimal float. The awareness is shifting behavior: these tokens "can't even pump on Binance anymore," he said, signaling that exchange listings no longer drive the price appreciation they once did for these structures.
Hayes pointed to Hyperliquid as a contrasting model. The protocol generates genuine product-market fit and returns revenue directly to token holders, giving HYPE actual utility beyond speculation. The structure also avoids the massive unlock cascades that tank most presale-heavy projects.
The market is rotating toward transparent tokenomics and real value generation over pump mechanics.
