Pop star Pink drew criticism on social media after reposting content opposing rapper Macklemore's pro-Palestinian remarks at a concert in New Jersey.
Macklemore performed at MetLife Stadium on Sept. 4 and 5 as an opening act for British musician Ed Sheeran. During the "Loop Tour" show, he wore a keffiyeh on stage before an audience of 80,000 people and called for "Free Palestine," specifically addressing Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
"Every human being walking on this earth deserves exactly the same freedom," Macklemore said. He performed his protest song "Hind's Hall," named after Hind Rajab, a young Palestinian girl killed in Gaza, with images of Gaza displayed on stadium screens.
Macklemore addressed Jewish concertgoers directly, stating that "criticizing Israel and condemning their actions as genocide is not a condemnation of Jewish people."
Pink subsequently shared a video from the advocacy group StopAntisemitism on her Instagram Story labeled "Awful," claiming Jewish fans were "exposed to propaganda against Israel." She asserted that Macklemore's speech and video presentation constituted a "false accusation of genocide" and that concert attendees were "entitled to apologies and refunds."
The comments sparked backlash across social media. Fans accused Pink of prejudice and called for boycotts of her work. Other users argued that Pink could not blame an opening act for expressing political opinions.
Pink subsequently posted several pieces of artwork as memes on Instagram without directly addressing Macklemore. Pink, who identifies as Jewish and is raising her children in the Jewish faith, has not issued a formal statement regarding the controversy.
