AMD has crossed the 30 percent threshold in x86 client CPU shipments for the first time, according to Mercury Research's second-quarter 2026 data. The chip designer captured 30.3 percent of combined desktop and mobile x86 processor shipments in Q2, leaving Intel with 69.7 percent.

The milestone represents nine percentage points of share gained in two years. AMD's x86 client share stood at 21.1 percent in Q2 2024. A sequential gain of 0.7 percentage points from Q1 2026, when AMD held 29.6 percent, pushed the company past the 30 percent mark for the first time.

The breakdown by segment tells two different stories. AMD's desktop CPU share reached 34.9 percent in Q2, a level the company has held or approached for several quarters. The driver: AMD's notebook processor share reached 28.9 percent of x86 shipments in the quarter, propelling the blended total above 30 percent.

The desktop market itself is in poor shape regardless of chip maker. Mercury Research found that desktop x86 CPU shipments dropped more than 20 percent year-over-year in Q2, following a nearly 20 percent year-over-year drop in Q1. Mercury Research called Q2 desktop x86 shipments "ugly."

Mercury Research attributed the decline to elevated memory and storage prices and constrained graphics card supplies, which require large amounts of video memory. "We believe that higher PC prices and limited GPU supplies are having a significant impact on end demand for desktop PCs, and thus desktop CPUs, as well," the research firm said. Consumers facing inflated component costs defer purchases.

The x86 metric itself requires context. Mercury Research tracks only x86 architecture processors—chips from AMD and Intel. Apple, Qualcomm and MediaTek all sell Arm-based processors for laptops, shipments that sit outside the x86 count entirely. Mercury Research estimated Arm-based chips accounted for 15.3 percent of total PC client CPU shipments in Q2 2026, a new record and up from roughly 13 percent in prior quarters. AMD's 30.3 percent x86 share translates to a smaller slice of the full PC processor market once Arm is included.

The competitive pressure from Arm is not evenly distributed. Apple's M-series chips compete most directly with premium Intel and AMD notebook processors in the performance-per-watt segment where Apple has held a sustained advantage since 2020. Qualcomm's Snapdragon X chips target the thin-and-light notebook category on Windows. MediaTek is expanding its footprint on Chromebooks and entry-level Windows devices. None displaces AMD's desktop or workstation positioning, but it caps the ceiling on mobile share gains across x86 broadly.

For Intel, the trajectory compounds a difficult period. The company has worked through manufacturing transitions and product lineup pressure from AMD's Ryzen and EPYC families. A 30.3-to-69.7 split leaves Intel with a commanding majority, but AMD's climb from 21.1 percent two years ago signals a clear direction. Intel has not disclosed a specific share-defense target publicly.

AMD's notebook gains carry more strategic weight than desktop numbers. The notebook market is larger by unit volume, and enterprise procurement cycles—where corporate IT departments refresh laptop fleets—create multi-year commitments once a vendor wins qualification with a major PC maker. Notebook share AMD captures from Intel today renews on three- to four-year replacement cycles.

The desktop collapse is an industry problem AMD cannot solve alone. When memory prices rise and GPU supply tightens, consumers defer builds and upgrades. AMD holds 34.9 percent of a shrinking pie. The year-over-year drop exceeding 20 percent in Q2, following the nearly 20 percent decline in Q1, means the absolute number of desktop CPUs shipped by both AMD and Intel sits well below year-ago levels.
