Ethereum is a proof-of-stake network. To help secure it, you stake ETH — you lock it up as collateral, run validator software, and earn rewards in return. The problem is that the base protocol demands exactly 32 ETH to run a validator, requires you to manage keys and uptime, and historically locked your capital with no easy exit. For most holders, that combination is either technically impossible or economically impractical. Lido exists to solve that problem.
The core mechanism is straightforward. You deposit any amount of ETH into Lido's smart contracts. In return, you receive stETH — a token that represents your staked position plus the rewards it accumulates over time. Lido's contracts pool deposits, hand them off to a curated set of professional node operators who actually run the validators, and distribute staking rewards back to stETH holders continuously. The protocol takes a 10 percent cut of those rewards, split evenly between the node operators who do the work and the Lido DAO treasury that governs the protocol. You keep the other 90 percent.
What makes stETH valuable beyond the yield is that it is liquid. You can hold it, lend it, use it as collateral, trade it, or bridge it across chains. Your ETH is working inside Ethereum's consensus layer and simultaneously available to you in DeFi. That dual utility is the product. It is why stETH became the dominant liquid staking token and why it sits at the foundation of enormous amounts of DeFi activity.
The wrapped version, wstETH, is simply a non-rebasing representation of the same position. stETH accrues rewards by increasing your balance daily — your wallet shows more tokens over time. wstETH instead holds its quantity constant and appreciates in value relative to ETH as rewards accumulate. That makes it far easier to integrate with lending protocols, bridges, and institutional custody systems that struggle with rebasing mechanics. When SharpLink announces a $200 million wstETH allocation, they are buying yield-bearing ETH exposure in the format that institutional infrastructure can actually handle.
On the governance side, LDO is Lido's governance token. It lets holders vote on protocol parameters, node operator sets, fee structures, and upgrades. What it does not do is capture protocol revenue directly. The 10 percent fee flows to node operators and the DAO treasury, not to LDO holders as a dividend. That distinction matters enormously when evaluating the token. LDO conveys influence over a protocol that processes enormous staking volume, but the link between that influence and token value is indirect and contested. The risks are real and worth naming clearly. The centralization concern has followed Lido since its early days. When one protocol controls a dominant share of Ethereum's staked supply, it introduces systemic risk to the network itself — a bug, a governance attack, or a regulatory action against Lido doesn't just hurt Lido users, it potentially destabilizes Ethereum's validator set. Lido's response has been to distribute operators and improve governance, but the structural tension between scale and decentralization doesn't disappear.
Smart contract risk is permanent and non-trivial. Lido's contracts hold an enormous amount of ETH. A critical exploit would be catastrophic. The protocol has been audited repeatedly and has a long track record without a major hack, but track record is not a guarantee. The oracle architecture that keeps stETH pegged to its correct value is another potential attack surface.
LDO specifically faces a harder question: if the token's governance rights don't translate into clear economic claims on the protocol's fee flow, what is the long-term case for its value? In an environment where regulators are drawing sharper lines between governance tokens and securities, and where communities themselves are questioning token necessity, LDO carries uncertainty that stETH does not.
Lido is real infrastructure doing a real job. stETH and wstETH are legitimate products with genuine utility, and the institutional demand SharpLink represents will not be the last. The protocol's engineering is serious, its dominance is earned, and its 2026 upgrades show a team operating at Ethereum's scale. But Lido is not without risk — centralization pressure, smart contract exposure, and a governance token with unclear value accrual are all genuine concerns. Understand what you own before you own it. stETH is a yield-bearing ETH derivative with smart contract risk attached. LDO is governance over a dominant protocol whose tokenomics are actively being questioned. Those are different bets, and neither is the same as just holding ETH.
