DeFi

Decentralized finance (DeFi) refers to a financial system built on public blockchains like Ethereum, offering services without traditional intermediaries.

Also: decentralized finance

What it is

DeFi leverages smart contracts on blockchains to create financial applications that operate autonomously, removing the need for banks, brokers, or exchanges. Users can lend, borrow, trade, and earn interest directly peer-to-peer through protocols. These applications are transparent, permissionless, and open-source, allowing anyone with an internet connection to participate globally. The core idea is to democratize finance and increase accessibility.

DeFi protocols are a major driver of activity and innovation on the Ethereum blockchain, often measured by Total Value Locked (TVL). News about DeFi frequently covers new protocol launches, security vulnerabilities, or regulatory discussions. Retail investors follow DeFi for opportunities in yield farming, lending, and trading, but must understand smart contract risks and potential impermanent loss.

Why it matters

DeFi offers alternative financial services and investment opportunities outside traditional banking, but carries unique risks.
