Rocket Lab stock slid 7.7 percent in after-hours trading after the company released second-quarter 2026 financial results showing a wider-than-expected loss and a subdued Q3 gross margin outlook.

The decline came even as Rocket Lab posted record quarterly revenue. The company had guided to a Q2 revenue ceiling of $240 million, and while top-line growth arrived, profitability remains the central concern for investors.

The primary drag on sentiment is the continued delay of the Neutron medium-lift reusable rocket. Rocket Lab disclosed in Q4 2025 that Neutron's first launch would slip to later in 2026 after a tank failure in early January.

The delays leave Rocket Lab exposed in the medium-lift category. SpaceX's Falcon 9 dominates that segment, and Relativity Space's Terran R is targeting the same market—both advancing while Neutron sits grounded past its original schedule.

Rocket Lab's Electron rocket holds a meaningful share of the small-satellite launch market. Each Electron mission generates between $7.5 million and $8.5 million, carrying payloads up to 300 kilograms. Neutron, designed for payloads up to 13,000 kilograms, is projected to fetch $50 million to $100 million per launch—a revenue step-change that remains contingent on a successful debut.

Despite the earnings miss, Rocket Lab secured its largest launch contract to date on July 27. The $266 million multi-launch agreement with the U.S. Space Force covers 12 suborbital launches and as many as six additional missions.

Rocket Lab shares have fallen more than 13 percent so far this year, a sharp contrast to broader enthusiasm around space equities following the June 12 initial public offering of Space Exploration Technologies, commonly known as SpaceX.

In the first quarter of 2026, Rocket Lab stock jumped 34 percent after its earnings report. The company posted revenue of $200.3 million—up 63.5 percent year over year—and an EPS loss of $0.07, improved from a $0.12 loss in Q1 2025.

Investors are watching for concrete Neutron progress: commercial launch contract bookings and a confirmed timeline for the rocket's first hot-fire test are the metrics most likely to move the stock. Rocket Lab is also pursuing European launch operations and working to build its overall launch backlog.
