During his time on the City Council, he chaired the Oversight and Investigations Committee, focusing on issues such as predatory lending associated with taxi medallion procurement and the city's Third Party Transfer Program. Career
Before his current role, Ritchie Torres served on the New York City Council as a member for the 15th district from 2014 to 2020. While on the City Council, he chaired the Committee on Public Housing and was a deputy majority leader. He also chaired the Oversight and Investigations Committee. In July 2019, Torres announced his bid for New York's 15th congressional district and won the November 2020 general election, assuming office in January 2021. His election made him the first openly gay Black man and the first openly gay Afro-Latino elected to Congress.
