Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, posted on X on Sunday, November 8, 2026, sharing his perspective on the debate surrounding data centers and artificial intelligence development. Buterin stated, "I know this is a predictable opinion from me but I don't agree with the strong emotional reaction against the anti-data-center movements that I've seen this week. As I see it, algorithmic progress means that whatever you would be able to do with more and bigger data centers in 2 years, you will be able to do with the data centers we have today in 4 years - probably sooner. So nothing remotely apocalyptically bad will happen from even extreme levels of success by anti-data-center people." He concluded that a compute hyper-scaling slowdown seems "quite net good."
Buterin's comments emerge amidst ongoing discussions about technological advancement and infrastructure demands. Recent Gokhshtein Media coverage has highlighted significant activity in the digital asset space, including Starknet's launch of Shadow Accounts for private DeFi activity and the closure of 82 DeFi projects in 2026 due to revenue drying up. The Financial Conduct Authority also opened consultations on DeFi compliance and cryptoasset exclusion, indicating a focus on the regulatory and operational environment for digital technologies. This context underscores the rapid changes and challenges within the broader tech and digital asset sectors.
Buterin suggests that a slowdown in compute hyper-scaling "seems quite net good" for society. He views this as a way to gain time to "better harden the world against both already-visible cybersecurity issues and any bio and other risks soon to come." Buterin's position implies that the bottleneck for scientific applications is not solely AI, asserting that slowing AI development by one year would have a much smaller impact on other scientific progress. His remarks suggest a call for a more deliberate, security-focused approach to technological growth rather than unbridled expansion.
