Ari Paul, co-founder and chief investment officer of BlockTower Capital, posted on X on Thursday, November 5, 2026, that he sees a significant shift in global economics. Paul declared, "One of the best macro setups of my lifetime is forming - a bet I’ve waited 20 years to put on. The final leg of the end…the end of the post WW2 economic and geopolitical framework. Interest rates will rise gratuitously." He indicated a timeframe of approximately two to four years for this bet.
The broader market is currently experiencing significant volatility, with the S&P 500 down 4.0% today and the Nasdaq having slid into correction territory, down more than 11% from its high a month ago. Bitcoin has also seen a downturn, dropping below $76,000 to $76,087, with $850 million in liquidations hitting the crypto market. Recent coverage has highlighted $370 million in Bitcoin longs liquidated and 1,500 Bitcoin moving between unknown wallets in a $114 million transfer.
Paul attributes this impending shift to global over-indebtedness and worsening fundamentals for sovereign nations. He posits that no clear resolution exists without a crisis, and while AI growth might offer some offset, the borrowing by AI companies will further compete with sovereign debt, pushing yields higher. Paul plans to leverage a mix of bond shorts and credit default swaps to short several European countries and potentially others, with sizing and holding costs being critical considerations for this long-term position.
“One of the best macro setups of my lifetime is forming - a bet I’ve waited 20 years to put on. The final leg of the end…the end of the post WW2 economic and geopolitical framework. Interest rates will rise gratuitously. The US rates will too, but that’s a harder and more complex bet, sjnce USD and treasuries act as a safehaven asset jn crisis. I’m researching sovereigns right now. Will likely use a mix of bond shorts and CDS to short a bunch of european countries and maybe some elsewhere. Timeframe on this is likely a ~2-4 year bet (still working on that), so sizing and holding costs are critical. The why: the world (and sovereigns) are overindebted with worsening fundamentals. No one even has a hypothesis, not even a guess, as to how the situation can be resolved without crisis. To the extent AI growth helps offset the problems, the borrowing of AI companies further competes with sovereign debt, pushing yields higher still. Politically, voters upset about worsening cost of living (and soon, rising unemployment), demand help, and the easiest (and most practical) help politicians can give (short term) is printing money for more handouts and services. Or…they engage in more deficit spending which further pushes up yields.”
