Anthropic reported a 1,127 percent year-over-year revenue increase in the third quarter, leaving established tech giants in the dust.
The AI startup's growth rate towers over every major public technology firm. Meta Platforms ($META) posted 26 percent revenue growth. Alphabet ($GOOGL) and Microsoft ($MSFT) grew 25 percent and 19 percent, respectively. Amazon ($AMZN), Apple ($AAPL), and Netflix ($NFLX) each grew 12 percent—barely ahead of the S&P 500's 13 percent median increase.
Specialized technology firms captured outsized gains. Palantir Technologies ($PLTR), a data analytics company, reported 96 percent revenue growth. SpaceX's revenue rose 161 percent, though the private company's Q3 results remain unaudited and reflect contractor estimates.
Tesla ($TSLA) broke from the pattern, reporting zero percent revenue growth in Q3—a stall that underscores its maturation as a mass-market EV manufacturer competing on price in a saturated market.
The divergence matters for investors. Capital is concentrating in two narrowing buckets: AI infrastructure and training, where Anthropic leads among funded startups, and specialized data extraction, where Palantir dominates. Legacy software and hardware players are grinding out mid-teens growth. Consumer-facing hardware and streaming services have hit saturation. For equity allocators, Q3 earnings confirm the sector is fracturing by competitive moat, not by valuation alone.
