SHOPIFY Inc. (SHOP) trades at $157, down 12 percent from its Oct. 12 record of $179.22, including a 6 percent decline on Oct. 29. The e-commerce software company reports third-quarter results before market open Nov. 3.

Management's August Q3 guidance calls for revenue growth in the low-30s percentage range, gross profit expansion in the mid-to-high 20s, and free cash flow margin in the high teens to low 20s. But Shopify has beaten its own forecasts in all three quarters of 2026.

In Q1, the company guided low-30s revenue growth and delivered 34 percent. Gross profit rose 32 percent versus a high-20s forecast. Free cash flow margin hit 15 percent, at the top of its low-to-mid-teens range.

Q2 was starker. Management projected high-20s revenue growth; Shopify achieved 34 percent. Gross profit jumped 31 percent against a mid-20s outlook. Free cash flow margin expanded to 18 percent from 16 percent a year prior. These results suggest conservative guidance all year.

Q3 presents a harder comparison. Shopify grew revenue 32 percent year-over-year in Q3 2025. Hitting 34 percent again in Q3 2026 would mean revenue around $3.8 billion versus $2.8 billion a year ago. But gross profit is expected to rise in the mid-to-high 20s—below the 31 percent growth reported in Q2.

The divergence reflects business mix. Merchant solutions, primarily payment processing, grew 37 percent in Q2 but retains only 38 percent gross margin. Subscription solutions grew 22 percent and retains 80 percent margin. Faster payments growth compresses overall gross margin despite beating revenue guidance.

Stock reaction history complicates the earnings setup. On May 5, when Shopify reported 34 percent Q1 revenue growth against a low-30s forecast, shares dropped 16 percent. Similar declines followed Q3 2025 results (7 percent) and Q4 2025 results (7 percent). Only August's post-Q2 report saw shares gain, jumping 17 percent.

Investors are pricing in earnings, not just guidance beats. The stock's 12 percent retreat gives management less downside margin for execution.
