Starknet has launched Shadow Accounts, a wallet privacy feature that generates distinct, persistent addresses for DeFi applications. Users fund these accounts via shielded balances held in the network's STRK20 privacy pool, allowing them to maintain lending, trading, and other positions under separate on-chain identities.
The core mechanic obscures the link between the Shadow Account and the wallet used to fund it. However, balances, transactions, and positions associated with Shadow Accounts remain publicly visible on-chain—the privacy applies only to the funding source connection.
Users connect their wallets to a DeFi application, switch to private mode, and deposit assets into a vault. Shadow Accounts then manage those positions until withdrawal back into the shielded balance.
StarkWare signaled broader applications beyond vaults, including liquidity provision, lending, borrowing, staking, derivatives trading, prediction markets, and NFT marketplaces.
The launch builds on StarkWare's June rollout of its STRK20 privacy framework, which enabled private transfers and shielded token balances across Starknet. That same month, StarkWare demonstrated a Private Know Your Customer system allowing users to verify personal information for compliance without exposing full identity documents.
