Stani Kulechov, founder of decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocol Aave, posted on X on Thursday, October 29, 2026, advocating for a significant shift in European financial policy. Kulechov stated, "Christine Lagarde has taken a cautious approach to stablecoin innovation, placing greater emphasis on CBDCs and the digital euro as alternatives. The next ECB president must bring a bold vision for Europe's financial future, one that embraces innovation, fosters competition, and positions Europe as a global leader rather than a follower. Stablecoins, DeFi, and tokenized assets are the foundations of the future of finance. Europe needs ECB leadership that recognizes their potential, removes barriers to innovation, and ensures the next generation of financial infrastructure is built in Europe."
Kulechov's remarks come as the DeFi sector continues its recovery, with DeFi lending total value locked (TVL) recently hitting $56 billion after a 55% rebound. Regulators, including the UK's Financial Conduct Authority, are actively engaging with the sector, opening consultations on DeFi anti-money laundering and crypto exclusion. The Cardano Foundation has also been pushing the EU for risk-based rules regarding DeFi and staking, reflecting ongoing efforts to shape the regulatory environment.
The Aave founder's statement implies that current European policy, particularly from the European Central Bank, risks stifling innovation in digital assets. Kulechov's view suggests that a proactive stance on stablecoins, DeFi, and tokenized assets is crucial for Europe to compete globally. He believes future ECB leadership should prioritize removing barriers to allow the next generation of financial infrastructure to develop within Europe.
