Eighty-two digital asset projects and protocols have ceased operations in 2026, reflecting severe capital constraints across DeFi, blockchain infrastructure and Web3 gaming. Researcher Stacy Muur published the list on X Tuesday.
The identified projects include Balancer, Radiant Capital, Neon EVM and Step Finance. The closures follow a prolonged bear market, with Bitcoin falling from its October 2025 high above $126,000 to below $60,000 earlier this year.
Ethereum L2 Blast, which accumulated over $2 billion in deposits, announced its shutdown earlier this month, citing an absence of a "credible path" to economic viability. Step Finance ceased operations in February following a treasury breach. Radiant Capital announced in June it would wind down after failing to recover from a 2024 exploit. Coinbase-backed Satori Finance concluded operations after determining revenue could no longer support the business.
DeFiLlama research published in August identified 100 crypto projects that announced shutdowns in 2026, with 40 occurring in the preceding 90 days. The most common reason cited was lack of product-market fit, followed by depleted funding and insufficient revenue. Some projects pivoted to alternative offerings.
Collectively, the identified projects raised approximately $1 billion but generated only $250 million in cumulative fees. Nine projects had each raised more than $50 million, indicating that substantial backing did not guarantee survival.
The consolidation trend reflects a capital crunch. DeFiLlama data shows venture funding increased in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, but the number of individual deals fell 80 percent. Mergers and acquisitions totaled 87 transactions at the time of the report, a 65 percent increase year-over-year, as smaller projects struggle to maintain independent operations.
