Bitcoin's dominance rate climbed to 60 percent on Wednesday, its highest level since May, signaling a clear rotation into the leading digital asset as altcoins struggle.
Yet price action tells a different story. Bitcoin slipped below $82,000 on Thursday, reversing a brief push above $84,000 on Wednesday. The move highlights a market awaiting fresh momentum.
Most major tokens showed little change to positive movement over the past seven days. Ether, XRP and Solana remained flat. Zcash advanced over 10 percent, standing out as an exception.
Smaller tokens took heavier damage. The CoinDesk Memecoin Index fell over 5 percent, while the CoinDesk Computing Select Index dropped 3.5 percent. The DeFi Select Index lost 2.5 percent, reflecting broader weakness outside Bitcoin.
Joel Kruger, market strategist at LMAX Group, attributed crypto's current malaise to alignment with equities weakness. "Investors are waiting for a new catalyst within the sector," Kruger said. He noted that global macroeconomic conditions remain the primary driver of price action, adding that Bitcoin's scarcity could help it withstand potential instability in equity markets.
Vikram Subburaj, CEO of India-based Giottus exchange, cautioned against chasing rallies. "Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds still lack a consistent institutional bid," Subburaj said. "Flows remain volatile, and sustained inflows are needed to confirm a stronger recovery."
Subburaj advised staggered entries with measured position sizes, recommending traders monitor ETF flows and Federal Reserve signals before increasing exposure. The Fed is scheduled to meet next week to discuss interest-rate policy.
On-chain technicals show XRP trading below the Ichimoku cloud, an indicator for support, resistance and momentum. The position suggests building bearish momentum, with further losses possible if prices remain below the cloud.
