Chamath Palihapitiya, founder and CEO of Social Capital, asserted on X on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, that the quality of revenue in the artificial intelligence sector is currently poor. Palihapitiya claimed, "1% of companies represent 90% of AI spending. Of that 90%, 80% of this spend are from unprofitable VC backed companies. So, roughly, $0.70-75 of every dollar of AI spending right now comes from AI companies spending VC investment dollars. As a result, the revenue quality in AI is currently poor."

This assessment comes as AI continues to be a focal point in tech investments. Recent Gokhshtein Media coverage includes reports that Anthropic is eying a $45 billion second data center deal with Nscale and Matthew Sigel's report that Supermicro exceeded F1Q27 guidance on AI demand. However, Dan Flax has suggested that Meta AI revenue is unlikely before 2028, highlighting the potential for delayed monetization in some areas of AI development.

Palihapitiya drew parallels to previous cycles, noting a similar trend in early cloud adoption where venture-backed startups were primary users of services like AWS. He suggested that the AI sector will require "a few clearing events" to transition from speculative spending to consistent, reliable revenue that impacts public market earnings reports. This transition, in his view, has not yet occurred, as much of the reported revenue growth originates from venture capital investments rather than sustainable commercial activity.
