Starknet launched its Shadow Accounts feature on Oct. 14, allowing users to interact with decentralized finance applications while obscuring connections to their main wallets.

The feature creates separate, persistent addresses for individual applications. Users fund these application-specific accounts by drawing from shielded balances within Starknet's STRK20 privacy pool.

This funding method permits users to establish and maintain DeFi positions—including lending, trading and other protocols—under different on-chain identities, effectively breaking the link between the shadow account and the primary wallet that provides its capital.

Starknet confirmed that balances, individual transactions and positions held within shadow accounts remain publicly visible on-chain. The privacy applies only to the wallet link, not the transaction data itself.

Once a DeFi application integrates Shadow Accounts, users can connect their primary wallets, activate private mode and deposit assets directly into a protocol vault. The Shadow Accounts then manage these positions until the user withdraws funds back into a shielded balance.

StarkWare, the development team behind Starknet, indicated the functionality could eventually extend beyond initial vault deployments to liquidity provision, lending and borrowing markets, staking protocols, derivatives trading, prediction markets and NFT marketplaces.

The launch follows privacy initiatives from StarkWare. In June, the company introduced its STRK20 privacy framework, establishing private transfers and shielded token balances directly on Starknet. Later that month, StarkWare demonstrated a Private Know Your Customer system that allowed users to complete identity verification without disclosing full personal identification documents.
