Tom Lee, managing partner at Fundstrat Global Advisors, recently dined with venture capital friends in Taiwan whom he first met a decade ago when he was beginning his Bitcoin research.

Those VC investors told Lee something stark: while their venture returns were solid, they wish they'd simply bought Bitcoin instead. Over ten years, Bitcoin delivered approximately an 80x return—outpacing what even successful venture allocators achieved.

Speaking at TOKEN2049, Lee advised investors to maximize exposure to Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana during this market cycle. He believes these Layer 1 blockchains will capture outsized value as institutional capital continues flowing in.

The infrastructure is now in place. Bitcoin spot ETFs launched in January 2024. Ethereum spot ETFs followed in May 2024. These products have collapsed the friction for traditional capital to enter these assets.

Solana has emerged as a third core contender—its high throughput, sub-cent transaction costs and growing developer ecosystem position it to capture a meaningful share of Layer 1 value. On-chain activity metrics show sustained traction across DeFi, NFTs and token launches.

For holders already positioned in these three assets, the setup is straightforward: continued institutional accumulation, improving UX and regulatory clarity should sustain upside pressure. Bitcoin's dominance as a store of value, Ethereum's DeFi moat and Solana's speed advantage create a clear hierarchy that institutional allocators are now recognizing.
