Starknet has launched Shadow Accounts, a wallet privacy feature designed to obscure connections between users' main wallets and their decentralized finance activity. The Ethereum layer-2 creates separate, persistent addresses for individual applications, allowing users to manage DeFi positions with distinct on-chain identities.
Users fund these Shadow Accounts using shielded balances held within Starknet's STRK20 privacy pool. This mechanism enables participants to maintain independent lending, trading or other DeFi positions without publicly linking them to their primary wallet addresses.
Once integrated into a DeFi application, the process involves connecting a wallet, activating a private mode and depositing assets into a vault. Shadow Accounts then manage these positions until the user withdraws funds back into a shielded balance.
Starknet clarifies that while the connection between the Shadow Account and the funding wallet is obscured, all balances, transactions and positions within these shadow accounts remain publicly visible on-chain.
StarkWare, the team developing Starknet, indicates the functionality could expand beyond initial vault integrations to liquidity provision, lending, borrowing, staking, derivatives trading, prediction markets and NFT marketplaces.
In June, StarkWare introduced its STRK20 privacy framework, establishing the foundation for private transfers and shielded token balances directly on the Starknet network. That same month, StarkWare demonstrated a Private Know Your Customer system allowing users to verify personal information without disclosing their full identity documents.
