Starknet is actively considering a move to become a Layer 1 blockchain, departing from its current position as an Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution. The protocol aims to establish itself as a fully quantum-resistant network by 2027.

Eli Ben-Sasson, co-founder and CEO of StarkWare, detailed the plan during an interview with Camila Russo. The strategic shift was initially announced in an October post by the Starknet team.

The proposed transition means Starknet would secure its own state and process transactions independently, rather than relying on Ethereum for finality and security. This represents a departure from its current zk-rollup design.

Developing a quantum-resistant network requires implementing cryptographic primitives designed to withstand attacks from future quantum computers. The 2027 target indicates a multi-year development roadmap for this security feature.

As a Layer 1, Starknet would operate its own consensus mechanism and native token economics, distinct from Ethereum's infrastructure. The STRK token, currently used for gas and governance on the Layer 2, would serve as the foundational asset for the new chain.
