What it is
A ZK-rollup (zero-knowledge rollup) is a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum that bundles hundreds of transactions off-chain and generates a cryptographic proof, called a zero-knowledge proof, verifying the validity of all transactions in the batch. This proof is then submitted to the Ethereum mainnet. Unlike optimistic rollups, ZK-rollups do not require a challenge period because the proof itself guarantees the correctness of the off-chain computations.
ZK-rollups are considered a highly secure and efficient scaling solution for Ethereum, offering instant finality for withdrawals to the mainnet once the proof is verified.
