ADDIS ABABA — Ethiopian federal forces and their allies have secured new territory in Tigray, marking a shift in front lines across the northern region after months of grinding conflict.
However, opposition groups continue to hold significant areas of Tigray, maintaining a fragmented battlefield that complicates both military strategy and civilian aid delivery.
The fighting has displaced hundreds of thousands. Many remain unable to return home due to ongoing insecurity and the presence of armed groups throughout the region.
Access to food, medicine and shelter remains severely restricted. International organizations say safe humanitarian corridors are essential to prevent a deepening crisis.
The Ethiopian government says its objective is to restore order and disarm non-state armed groups. Opposition factions cite grievances over political representation and regional autonomy.
The conflict, which began in late 2020, has drawn intervention from regional and international actors. The United Nations and other international bodies have called on all parties to respect humanitarian law and protect civilians.
