Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated on X today, October 15, that the focus for zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machines (zkEVMs) should transition from speed to security. Buterin congratulated the airbender team for a milestone, adding, “At this point, I consider the battle for speed to be definitively won, and the top priority for zkEVMs should shift fully to security.” He detailed that security means formally verifying equivalence to the Ethereum specification, a hard maximum bound on prover cost, and the security of the proof system itself.

Buterin's statement comes as the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector continues to grapple with security risks, a topic highlighted in recent Gokhshtein coverage detailing DeFi Lending TVL hitting $56 billion during cross-chain security concerns. zkEVMs are crucial for scaling Ethereum by processing transactions off-chain and then submitting a cryptographic proof to the mainnet. Projects like Starknet have also been innovating, recently launching shadow accounts to obscure wallet-DeFi links, which could impact user privacy and security.

Buterin's view suggests that the technical hurdle of speed in zkEVM development has largely been overcome, shifting the industry's critical focus towards ensuring the robustness and reliability of these scaling solutions. His call implies that future advancements and user adoption will depend heavily on developers' ability to prove and maintain the highest security standards for zkEVMs, potentially influencing research and development priorities across the Ethereum ecosystem.
