TSMC has secured a $2 billion multi-year supply agreement with GlobalFoundries for silicon interposers, critical components in its CoWoS advanced packaging technology.

Silicon interposers act as a bridge between processor dies and memory stacks within a single package, enabling the higher bandwidth and lower latency required for modern AI accelerators. TSMC's CoWoS (Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate) packaging integrates these components to deliver the performance that Nvidia and AMD customers demand.

GlobalFoundries will expand manufacturing capacity at its Malta, New York facility to supply the interposers. The deal reflects a broader effort to diversify and localize the semiconductor supply chain while addressing potential production bottlenecks as demand for high-performance AI chips accelerates.

Advanced packaging has emerged as a competitive moat in the chip industry. Interposers represent a specialized, high-value component within the CoWoS stack, and their complexity and cost have risen as performance requirements intensify. By locking in a multi-year supply commitment from a dedicated partner, TSMC reduces execution risk on a manufacturing input that directly constrains its ability to ship products to hyperscalers.
