A Bank for International Settlements study found that widely used crypto metrics significantly misrepresent underlying economic activity across Bitcoin, Ethereum and stablecoins. Bitcoin on-chain transfer values can vary by as much as sixfold depending on measurement methodology.

The discrepancy stems from how transaction outputs are interpreted. Bitcoin's transaction structure returns unspent funds to the sender as "change," which can be counted as a separate output despite not representing a transfer to another party.

Measurement challenges extend to Bitcoin's market capitalization. The BIS researchers found that conventional market cap has at times been up to four times higher than realized capitalization, which values each Bitcoin at the price it last moved on-chain.

The study analyzed 100 billion blockchain records across Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tron. Similar measurement issues are prevalent throughout the ecosystem. Metrics like transaction volumes, market capitalization and total value locked often suggest accuracy not supported by underlying data.

Ethereum presented distinct measurement challenges due to extensive smart contract usage. Out of approximately 67.5 million active smart contracts examined, about 54 million could not be classified using the study's established categories.

Stablecoin activity interpretation is complicated by multi-chain deployment. USDT on Ethereum showed stronger links to DeFi activity, while USDT on Tron was more associated with payment and store-of-value use cases.

The differences were pronounced in smart contract holdings. In 2022, USDT held by smart contracts on Ethereum exceeded 20 percent, compared with around 1 percent on Tron. Aggregating USDT activity across blockchains conflates different economic uses.

On-chain indicators should be regarded as "noisy approximations rather than direct measures of economic activity," the BIS researchers concluded.

Some analytics providers have implemented methodologies to distinguish raw blockchain activity from adjusted measures. Visa's Onchain Analytics dashboard displays both total and adjusted stablecoin transaction volumes, with its adjusted methodology designed to remove confounding elements.
