Joe Lubin, co-founder of Consensys, confirmed the company is evaluating "a number of very exciting paths forward" for MetaMask, directly addressing IPO speculation at the KBW conference.
MetaMask commands over 30 million monthly active users and dominates wallet-based access to decentralized applications. On-chain data from Nansen shows daily unique active wallets connected to DeFi protocols through MetaMask consistently exceed two million, driving significant transaction volume across Ethereum and other EVM chains.
The strategic review could include a token launch, acquisition, or spin-off to capitalize on MetaMask's user base and fee generation. Any major shift would ripple through liquidity flows and user access across the ecosystem, given MetaMask's integration with thousands of DeFi protocols.
Consensys has positioned MetaMask as the gateway to decentralized finance. Its market share in non-custodial wallets remains strong, with wallet flows indicating consistent user engagement in staking, lending, and NFT marketplaces.
Lubin did not specify a timeline. The company is expected to provide formal details in an upcoming investor briefing or press release.
