Cleveland Browns veteran wide receiver Jerry Jeudy clarified a viral TikTok livestream video where he appeared to signal a preference in the team's quarterback competition.
Jeudy said his four-finger gesture referred to his daughter's age, not Deshaun Watson, who wears No. 4. The video appeared edited, with a skip between Jeudy's gesture and the question shown.
"I threw out the four because she's 4 years old," Jeudy said, explaining that before the edit, he had shown his daughter on camera.
After the video went viral on July 26, Jeudy spoke with Watson and Shedeur Sanders directly to address the mischaracterization. Both quarterbacks have been alternating first-team repetitions in Cleveland's ongoing competition.
"I don't know what they're thinking in their mind, so I had to just go up there and clear it up to them and know what really happened and not what the media portrayed it to be," Jeudy said.
Jeudy took to social media to dispute the idea that he was endorsing Watson and emphasized his maturity as a player.
"I've been in the league for seven years — at least five or six of the years, it's all been a quarterback competition within those years," Jeudy said Wednesday. "I think I'm mature enough and wise enough to not answer questions like that."
He expressed surprise that people believed he would make such a statement publicly, acknowledging the intense scrutiny around the Browns' quarterback situation.
"For everyone to believe that I would answer something like that on social media is kind of wild, but you got to understand this is where we're in and understand how everybody's viewing the quarterback competition in this room," Jeudy said. "So every little thing is going to try to turn it into that. But like I said, I spoke on it. I said what I truly felt about the situation, and I leave it off from there."
Jeudy, 27, ranked sixth in the league with 1,229 receiving yards one season ago. His value to the Browns extends beyond catches, with teammates noting his leadership in holding young receivers accountable on and off the field.
