The San Jose Sharks named Macklin Celebrini their 11th full-time captain on Friday. At 20 years and 104 days old, he becomes the youngest player in franchise history to hold the distinction and ranks as the sixth-youngest full-time captain in NHL history.
General manager Mike Grier said he knew Celebrini would one day lead the team but sought the right moment. Grier observed Celebrini calling new draft picks, organizing teammates to return to San Jose before camp and working all summer to improve.
"Once we got into training camp and saw how things were going," Grier said, "it kind of finalized that decision from there." Celebrini will wear the C for the first time Saturday when the Sharks play the Golden Knights in Las Vegas for their final preseason game.
Celebrini acknowledged the honor and responsibility. "It's a huge honor," he said. "It's just something that I can't really take lightly. Obviously, there's a responsibility that comes with that. But at the same time, I'm not really going to change who I am or what I do."
Grier emphasized Celebrini earned the role through his work ethic, competitive play and conduct off the ice. "He's earned it through the way he works and competes and the way he's played on the ice and the way he's handled himself off the ice," Grier said. He added that it is rare for a player drafted at 18 to become captain by age 20, but Celebrini is one of those special talents.
The Sharks formally presented the captaincy in a video Friday morning. Hockey Hall of Famer Joe Thornton, who served as Sharks captain from 2010 to 2014, held a teal jersey with Celebrini's name and No. 71 featuring a capital C on the front.
Thornton's involvement held symbolic weight. Two years prior, Thornton announced Celebrini as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NHL draft at The Sphere in Las Vegas. Celebrini also lived at Thornton's South Bay property for the last two years. Thornton's No. 19 jersey was retired by the organization in 2024.
Celebrini, a top-line center, established a new team record for scoring in a single season in April. He recorded 115 points in 82 games during the 2025-26 season, breaking Thornton's nearly 20-year-old record by one point.
