BANGOR — The body of a newborn baby girl was discovered on a coastal shoreline in Bangor, Gwynedd, on Sunday afternoon by a member of the public.

A post-mortem examination determined the infant was a girl. Initial indications suggest the baby may have been in the water for up to a few weeks, North Wales Police said in an update Thursday.

North Wales Police are continuing to search for the mother and have urged her to come forward. Superintendent Llinos Davies said police prioritize the mother's welfare and safety.

Davies also asked the public for assistance, urging anyone with concerns about a woman who may have been pregnant or whose behavior has been unusual over recent months to contact authorities. She said all names received would be treated with discretion and could be eliminated if not the mother.

Fiona Giraud, Director of Midwifery and Woman's Service for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, issued a direct appeal to the mother. Giraud emphasized that the mother does not need to face the situation alone and that support is available.

Police are consulting oceanographers regarding currents to determine where the baby may have entered the water. House-to-house inquiries are ongoing in the area where the body was found.

A number of calls have been received from the public following an earlier appeal this week, and all information is being taken seriously, police said. Authorities can be contacted on 101, quoting Operation Melex, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
