Victor Wembanyama said losing the NBA Finals to the New York Knicks in five games serves as motivation for the San Antonio Spurs in the upcoming season.
Wembanyama emphasized the importance of processing the loss as a team rather than individually. "While some emotions are dealt with alone, it is better to face them as a team," he said.
Team workouts held over the summer in Houston, organized by De'Aaron Fox, and in Paris, arranged by Wembanyama, helped the Spurs confront the loss. Wembanyama found the time together in Paris particularly meaningful.
The pain of the Finals loss lingers but evolves with time, Wembanyama said. He described experiencing sleepless nights but stressed the importance of accepting and feeling all emotions without hiding from them.
Wembanyama acknowledged the 100-game path back to the Finals ahead. He said the team is in a strong position, full of hope and ambition, and ready for the challenge.
Regarding the Spurs' new status as a Finals contender, Wembanyama said it feels normal. He noted that the team felt it was in its rightful place last season as it approached the top of the conference.
This summer, Wembanyama and teammate Harrison Barnes trained with French rugby club Provence Rugby in Aix-en-Provence. He called the experience great and inspiring, particularly observing the team spirit and relationships among players, coaches, and fans.
The rugby training was demanding, Wembanyama said. He found it beneficial for his vestibular system, new movement patterns, and developing strength.
Wembanyama also addressed his heightened international fame, a level he said he desired before being drafted. He admitted it is often too much but views it as a symbol of success.
