BUENOS AIRES — Toyota Motor announced a $1.34 billion investment to build a production plant in Argentina focused on electric vehicles, Economy Minister Luis Caputo confirmed Wednesday.

The new facility will manufacture a fully electric vehicle, part of Toyota's strategy to expand EV production worldwide. The project represents a significant commitment to electric vehicle manufacturing in Latin America.

Toyota's presence in Argentina dates to 1997, when it opened a plant in Zárate, Buenos Aires. The automaker has invested more than $2 billion in that facility since its opening.
