MetaDAO offers a new approach to on-chain capital formation, giving token buyers direct governance over raised funds. Unlike most launchpads that transfer capital directly to project founders, MetaDAO keeps raised funds within a project treasury, which token holders govern.
The model gives founders a fixed monthly budget. Any larger expenditures, new token issuances or subsequent funding rounds must secure approval through a decision market. In this market, traders price each proposal over a three-day period.
MetaDAO has seen strong demand, with 23 sales drawing $624.7 million in offers against $45.4 million accepted capital. For instance, a July raise for Rip Cars sought $250,000 but received $32.0 million in offers. MetaDAO accepted the target amount and returned excess capital to bidders.
Since its first sale in April 2025, demand for MetaDAO offerings has risen from $5.8 million to $32.0 million for the Rip Cars project. The protocol closed 22 of its 23 sales, indicating market acceptance for its governance-centric funding model.
Revenue for MetaDAO comes from fees on the trading of tokens created through its raises, with income tracking raises approximately one quarter late. The protocol reported $1.8 million in revenue during the fourth quarter of 2025, followed by $556,000 in the first quarter of 2026 and $376,500 in the second quarter of 2026. The third quarter of 2026 closes on Sept. 30.
META token holders control the project treasury, intellectual property and the right to mint new tokens. Issuing a new token requires staking 200,000 META, after which traders evaluate and price the proposal for three days, providing a market-driven consensus.
Founders can reserve up to 50 percent of the initial token supply, but these tokens only unlock once early buyers are in profit. This mechanism incentivizes teams to price their sales fairly, as higher initial prices delay the unlock condition for their own holdings.
MetaDAO’s structure addresses a challenge in traditional venture capital, which has become concentrated in a few sectors and large deals. This leaves many smaller teams without viable fundraising avenues. By placing capital under investor control, MetaDAO makes backing these nascent teams more attractive.
On-chain capital formation offers advantages over traditional private equity. A private company share is a spreadsheet entry requiring board consent and a transfer agent for sale. A token, however, is a bearer asset on a public ledger, offering continuous pricing, near-instant settlement and transparent, code-governed rules accessible to all holders. This allows a company with 15 employees to grant a sellable claim in a matter of hours.
While crypto has enabled such mechanisms since 2017, the post-funding environment often lacked robust investor protections. MetaDAO aims to rectify this by ensuring ongoing influence for token holders through proposal voting and real-time monitoring of treasury allocations, preventing founders from draining or misusing funds.
Despite its current gated structure, where MetaDAO exercises discretion over project participation, the long-term objective is to transition to a fully permissionless platform. This would allow any team with an idea to apply, set terms and let the market determine funding viability, further decentralizing capital access for internet ventures. Alea Research said MetaDAO has attracted significant capital, but the platform's next step is to onboard more quality founders.
