TORONTO – Kawhi Leonard addressed his viral 2018 Media Day laugh, eight years later, at the Toronto Raptors' 2026 Media Day. The veteran forward is set to begin his return season with the Raptors after agreeing to a two-year, $115 million contract extension.
This deal includes a player option for the 2028-29 season. Leonard's laugh went viral in 2018 when he told reporters he was a "fun guy," despite his typically reserved demeanor.
The moment became a defining part of his public image during his championship season in Toronto. Leonard said he was content with its lasting impact.
"Whatever's making people happy, I guess," Leonard said. "If I can make people laugh with my laugh, then I'm good."
He added that the moment even sparked an idea for a potential project. "We were thinking of making a show about who can have the funniest laugh," Leonard said. This reaffirms his comfort with the viral clip.
Leonard is back with the Raptors after his trade from the LA Clippers. He previously led the Raptors to their first championship in franchise history during his initial tenure.
Leonard also discussed his decision to depart Toronto for the Clippers in 2019. He cited family proximity as a primary factor in his move to Los Angeles.
"I kind of made my decision to go to LA based on my family," Leonard said. He noted the importance of spending time with older family members.
"Had a lot of older people in my family that I had the time to spend with before they passed away," Leonard said. He described that time as "great" for him.
Leonard reiterated that he does not dwell on his past choices. "I don't go back and think about it too much," he said. "I don't think about it too much."
Teammates have also commented on Leonard's personality. Scottie Barnes described Leonard as "a pretty great guy," adding that he believes Leonard "talks a pretty good amount" despite perceptions.
RJ Barrett echoed this sentiment, saying, "I'd say he's a fun guy, a cool dude." This perception aligns with Leonard's own "fun guy" declaration from 2018.
