WASHINGTON – The Washington Commanders will have quarterback Jayden Daniels, linebacker Frankie Luvu and tight end Chig Okonkwo on their trip to London this week. All three players will participate in practice in some capacity, coach Dan Quinn announced Monday. The team departs for London on Tuesday.
The update follows Washington's 33-31 upset victory over the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in their home opener Sunday. That win marked the Commanders' first of the season. The team prepares to face the Indianapolis Colts next Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Quinn confirmed the players' return to practice. "Good to report that he and Frankie Luvu and Chig Okonkwo will all be back in practice this week in some form and fashion," Quinn said.
Traveling and practicing does not guarantee any of the three players will play against the Colts. Daniels is considered the least likely to play in Week 4. Most observers expect his return in Week 5 when the Commanders play the New York Giants.
Daniels dislocated his left elbow in a Week 2 loss against Dallas. He did not play in Week 3. The Commanders had been without several starters against Seattle and were beat up in the first part of the season.
Quinn addressed Daniels' return-to-play timeline, saying no firm decision has been made. "We haven't just yet, but I think once we get there, that'll give us a little more indication of where we're at, how we can go into that space," Quinn said.
Quinn expressed optimism about the team's health. He said he would have a better sense of Daniels' status after Thursday's practice. "Just the fact that we're working back into that space gives me optimism heading into the week," Quinn said.
Washington's right guard Sam Cosmi, who is dealing with a concussion, and safety Nick Cross, who has an illness, will both undergo re-evaluation Tuesday. These assessments will occur before the team leaves for London. Their travel status for the Week 4 matchup depends on these evaluations.
