Federal agents seized more than 2,000 pounds of methamphetamine Tuesday in South Texas, concealed within a commercial tractor-trailer hauling cabbage, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The DEA's McAllen office led the operation as part of an ongoing Homeland Security Task Force investigation. The seizure involved multiple federal and state agencies: Homeland Security Investigations, the FBI, Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Jonathan C. Pullen, associate chief of operations for the DEA's Southcentral Region, said the San Antonio Division frequently encounters methamphetamine hidden in produce shipments. Besides cabbage, traffickers conceal the drug in lettuce and blueberries, he said.
Authorities have made no arrests in connection with the seizure. The investigation remains ongoing. The DEA has not identified the commercial carrier, driver, shipment origin, final destination or the border crossing where the drugs were seized.
