Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) is openly considering a presidential run in 2028, he revealed during an interview for the "Our Republican Legacy" podcast set for release Friday.
The five-term congressman announced his retirement from Congress last year. He left open the possibility of leading a ticket or joining another candidate as running mate. "I won't lie. Yes, I would love to," Bacon said. "But I would also be happy to be the right-hand man or left-hand man to someone else that has the same values."
Bacon highlighted his Christian faith as the foundation for his conservative pitch. "We need leadership that stands as an example of decency, humanity, and represents Christian values in the Gospels — how we're supposed to act, the golden rule, and things like that," he said.
He stopped short of committing to a campaign. "There's a part of me that wants to step out and take that risk. I'm also happy to support someone who fills that role, and I can be on their team," Bacon said.
He added, "I do definitely want to be on a team, whether I'm the lead or part of the team, fighting for these values for our country."
Chris Vance, executive director of Our Republican Legacy, told the Washington Examiner that Bacon represents a "principled Republican who stood up for core conservative values." Vance said the 2028 field has "absolutely a lane for a traditional Republican like Don Bacon."
Bacon has represented Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District since 2017. He announced his retirement last year citing a desire for more family time. He has never sought the presidency before.
Bacon is among a growing number of Republicans eyeing 2028. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) recently signaled interest in the Republican primary. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are considered frontrunners, though both have refrained from confirming their intentions.
