The privacy coin sector rose 213 percent above its price level from Bitcoin's October 2025 peak on Oct. 6, 2025. Privacy is now the only crypto sector trading above that high, while the median asset among the top 200 remains 58 percent below October 2025 levels.

Bitcoin itself trades approximately 36 percent below its October 2025 high. Decentralized finance (DeFi) is down roughly 27 percent and gaming assets have fallen 74 percent from their respective October 2025 levels.

Zcash drives the sector's performance. ZEC has surged 2,496 percent over the past year and now accounts for approximately 62 percent of the privacy sector's total market capitalization. The token climbed from the 82nd largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization to the 7th.

Institutional inflows reinforced the rally. Grayscale's Zcash ETF attracted $34.4 million in net inflows by Sept. 4 since its launch on Aug. 25. ZEC prices pushed above $1,000 during this period, and network computing power increased from around 25 GSol/s in late August to more than 30 GSol/s.

Futures open interest for Zcash reached approximately $2.3 billion, according to Coinpa. The growing leverage indicates increased sensitivity to market movements.

Privacy's strength extends beyond Zcash. Excluding ZEC, the cap-weighted privacy asset basket still shows an 85 percent gain over one year and a 56 percent increase since October 2025. All eight privacy assets with at least one year of trading history are positive over that period. Only about one in eight of the top 200 cryptocurrencies can claim similar one-year gains.

Monero doubled over the past year. Monero, Dash, and ZEN each outperformed Bitcoin during the past 90 days. Earlier in 2026, Dash surged 71 percent, accompanied by gains in Monero, Decred, and ZEN. Monero broke out of a multi-year trading range when it surged above $600. As Bitcoin cleared $81,000, privacy coins led again, with ZEC and Dash among the strongest movers.

The privacy sector was valued at just $7.1 billion one year ago. Glassnode now estimates its market capitalization at $33.6 billion, representing an addition of approximately $26.5 billion in market value. Nearly half of this expansion occurred during the latest 30-day period, coinciding with an unusually broad crypto bounce where 91.5 percent of the top 200 assets gained over the past month.

This market breadth does not hold over longer timeframes. Only 25 top-200 assets remain positive over one year. Among the 25 largest digital assets, only ZEC, HYPE, Monero, and Wrapped Bitcoin currently sit above their Oct. 6, 2025, prices.

Regulatory risk remains a factor for privacy assets. These assets have historically faced increased scrutiny from exchanges and anti-money laundering regulations.
