Alcaraz Reaches US Open Quarterfinals With Straight-Sets Win Over Paul

Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed and defending champion, defeated Tommy Paul in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, advancing to the US Open quarterfinals.

Alcaraz will face the winner of Sunday's fourth-round match between American Ben Shelton, the No. 8 seed, and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The quarterfinal is scheduled for Tuesday.

Alcaraz is pursuing his third US Open title and eighth major championship overall. His victory marked his 18th consecutive win at a Grand Slam event.

"I played my game, I tried to play my style," Alcaraz said after the match. He acknowledged Paul's talent and dangerous serve but said he aimed to be aggressive and apply pressure on return games. "I'm just really happy with the performance today."

In the women's draw, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka defeated American Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 15 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Sabalenka recovered from a break down in the second set after the first set went to seven breaks of serve. She is pursuing her third consecutive US Open title.

Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova advanced to a quarterfinal against Sabalenka with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Marta Kostyuk.

Five American men reached the fourth round: Paul, Shelton, Learner Tien, Frances Tiafoe and Alex Michelsen. It marks the highest number of American men in the fourth round of a major since eight advanced at the US Open in 1995.

Tien, 20, is the youngest American man to reach the US Open fourth round since Andy Roddick in 2002. No American man has won a Grand Slam title since Roddick's 2003 US Open victory.

Tiafoe took the opening set tiebreaker against Daniil Medvedev on Louis Armstrong Stadium, winning seven of eight points after Medvedev recovered from a 4-2 deficit. Michelsen held a set and break lead against Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Grandstand.

In doubles, Great Britain's Harry Patten and Finland's Harri Heliovaara advanced to the third round. British pair Harriet Dart and Maia Lumsden were eliminated from the women's doubles, losing 6-2, 6-2 to Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.
