The Group of Seven nations issued a warning on Sept. 4 urging organizations to adopt post-quantum security immediately, framing quantum computing as an economic and business risk rather than a distant cryptographic problem.
The core threat: attackers can harvest encrypted data today and decrypt it once sufficiently powerful quantum computers exist. The G7 report stresses that sensitive government and commercial data collected now is already at risk, and that migration to quantum-resistant cryptography could take years to complete.
Quantum computers pose a dual vulnerability. They could compromise both encryption and authentication mechanisms—including the ability to forge trusted data and forge digital signatures. This capability would jeopardize secure communications, smart contracts, and the integrity of digital transactions and legal agreements.
In response, developers across major blockchain networks are actively stress-testing defenses. Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana developers are implementing post-quantum fixes for their protocols to protect digital wallets and custodial systems.
The G7 report acknowledges uncertain timelines for powerful quantum computers to emerge, creating a strategic tension: the call for immediate action rests on a threat whose full realization remains speculative. Despite this timeline uncertainty, the G7's core message is unambiguous—preparedness is essential, and delaying migration efforts leaves critical systems vulnerable.
