Zcash (ZEC) surged 20 percent today, breaking through the $1,000 level to hit $1,020 and detonating $34 million in short liquidations across major derivatives exchanges.

Coinglass data shows open interest had stacked heavily below $1,000—a classic crowded short setup. When ZEC pushed past that resistance, margin calls cascaded through overleveraged positions, forcing rapid closures. Funding rates on perpetual futures flipped sharply positive, a tell-tale sign of long demand overwhelming shorts. The order book absorbed substantial buy pressure above $950, with sellers capitulating.

Zcash's privacy infrastructure—zero-knowledge proofs enabling shielded transactions that obscure sender, receiver, and amount—continues to attract users facing regulatory scrutiny of transaction data. The feature is gaining traction as debate around data sovereignty intensifies.

Broader market strength supported the move. Bitcoin traded at $79,331, up 0.7 percent, while Ethereum held $2,447, also up 0.7 percent. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index registered 74, signaling "Greed" sentiment.

For ZEC holders, the $1,000 level is now critical. If it holds as support after profit-taking, further upside is plausible. The next Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Sept. 17-18 will reset macro expectations for digital assets.
