MINNEAPOLIS
Three people are dead after a shooting at the Loring Tower apartment building in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon. The suspect died by suicide after officers arrived. At least six others were shot, including two Minneapolis police officers.
Police were called to the building near 15 East Grant Street at 4:36 p.m. after reports of gunfire. Officers entered at 4:39 p.m. and found multiple victims on the ground floor. As they moved to upper levels, they encountered haze that limited visibility and came under fire.
One civilian died at the scene; another died later at a hospital. Two others remain hospitalized. One officer was shot in the stomach and underwent surgery, listed in stable condition. A second officer was shot in the leg with non-life-threatening injuries. A third officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries from an unspecified cause.
Police had responded to a disturbance involving the same suspect earlier Wednesday. The suspect had been evicted from the apartment that day, according to a source familiar with the investigation.
A witness told local media the shooting occurred inside an elevator in the apartment complex.
Authorities from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension responded to the scene. Police issued a public advisory at 6 p.m. urging people to avoid the area from 12th Street to Franklin Avenue and from Hennepl Avenue to Third Avenue South. Metro Transit canceled northbound Route 10 service from Leamington Ramp.
