Soitec's chief executive told Reuters the company is requiring customers to commit to multi-year supply contracts backed by cash deposits and fixed pricing — a structure that reflects how tight the market for Photonics-SOI wafers has become as AI data center buildouts accelerate. The agreements extend beyond fiscal year 2027, giving Soitec a forward revenue backlog approaching two years of group revenue.
The wafers at the center of this demand are Photonics-SOI substrates — engineered silicon-on-insulator materials that serve as the base layer for silicon photonics chips. Those chips convert electrical signals into light pulses inside optical transceivers, which move data between GPUs and across AI data center networks at speeds copper-based connections cannot match. Every silicon photonics chip currently in commercial production is built on a substrate that Soitec manufactures.
That position — sole supplier to the entire silicon photonics stack — is what makes the cash-deposit structure plausible. Customers do not pay upfront to a vendor they can replace. The deposit terms reflect a supplier with no direct competitor at its layer of the supply chain, not a company negotiating from parity.
The commercial rationale for locking in supply is straightforward. AI infrastructure spending has collapsed the typical lead times for optical components. Hyperscalers building out GPU clusters need transceivers in volumes the supply chain was not sized to deliver, and the constraint traces back to substrate availability. By securing capacity with cash, buyers are effectively paying a premium for certainty rather than waiting on a spot market that no longer has slack.
Soitec's revenue mix crossed from majority smartphone to majority AI in its first quarter of fiscal year 2027 — a compositional shift that took years to build but happened abruptly in the results. The company released that figure six days ahead of schedule. Pre-releasing results early is unusual; doing so when the news is good — as the AI number came in ahead of expectations — suggests management wanted the market to reprice quickly.
The stock's trajectory over the past year makes that timing more pointed. Shares traded near €192 after a 673 percent year-to-date run through late spring, a level at which analysts explicitly declined to buy. The same analyst flagged the stock at €115 — a 40 percent decline from the spring peak — as the level at which the risk-reward inverts. At that price, the market was selling a stock whose underlying earnings power was being revised upward, a divergence created in part by a four-year governance crisis that had depressed the multiple without touching the technology.
Soitec carried a management and board instability problem for roughly four years that kept institutional buyers on the sidelines even as the photonics franchise strengthened. The new management team represents the structural change that makes the lower price actionable rather than a value trap.
Soitec's photonics operation is also architecture-neutral in a way that almost nothing else in the optical supply chain is. The debate over co-packaged optics versus pluggable transceivers, or over different switching architectures inside the data center, does not affect which substrate the winning design runs on. Every architecture uses Photonics-SOI. That neutrality is a genuine competitive property — the company collects on the buildout regardless of which vendor's optical design the hyperscalers ultimately standardize on.
Capacity expansion is already under way. Soitec's Singapore facility qualified six months ahead of its original schedule, adding production capacity before the demand curve required it. The cash deposits attached to the multi-year agreements function as a pre-financing mechanism — customers are effectively funding capacity that Soitec then builds on their behalf, reducing the capital risk on the expansion.
The smartphone business — which was the majority of Soitec's revenue until this most recent quarter — is running through the deepest trough in a decade. That drag does not disappear because AI is growing; it compresses the consolidated margin while the mix shift plays out. The old gross margin profile is not recoverable at the old revenue composition, even if total sales recover to prior peaks, because the photonics business carries different margin characteristics than the mobile RF-SOI business that dominated the P&L for years.
The valuation work frames the stock through a sum-of-the-parts lens, separating the photonics franchise from the declining mobile substrate book. That approach produces bear, base and bull scenarios rather than a single price target, reflecting the uncertainty in how quickly the smartphone trough resolves and how fast the AI capacity reservation agreements convert to recognized revenue. The multi-year deposit structure reduces volume risk but does not eliminate timing risk on when cash becomes earnings.
