Officers from Greater Manchester Police's tactical unit ended a two-day standoff in Salford on Saturday by climbing a ladder to a back-porch roof and arresting a wanted man while he lay asleep. The operation took place at a property on Reservoir Street in the Weaste area of the city.
Footage from the scene shows an officer carefully placing a ladder against the roof before reaching up and grabbing the sleeping man. The man woke, a struggle followed, and officers pulled him down into the garden below, where he was taken into custody. His trousers came down during the struggle.
GMP said another force had asked it to arrest the man, who was wanted on recall to prison in connection with separate matters. The 37-year-old now faces additional suspicions of causing a public nuisance, criminal damage, public order offences, burglary and assaulting two police officers. Two GMP officers sustained minor injuries during the incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Helen Bagnall said officers worked continuously with partner agencies throughout the two days of disruption. "During two days of disruption to the local community, we worked continuously with our partners to bring this matter to a safe conclusion," she said.
Bagnall described the operation as an extensive use of vital policing resources and said it clearly illustrated the risks officers face daily to protect people across Greater Manchester. She thanked Salford residents for their patience while emergency services managed the scene.
Some neighbouring properties were damaged as a result of the man's actions during the standoff, Bagnall said. She added that GMP would work with partners to ensure affected residents received support in the aftermath.
The man remained in custody following his arrest.
